To Life Beyond: Opera Vera’s Debut Shines Beauty, Heritage, and Vision
An ode to elegance, innovation, and the icons redefining beauty today
At Turton Tower, against the backdrop of one of England’s most evocative heritage sites, photographer Jo Morley captured soprano Yuliya Trishkeu in a series of images that define the essence of Opera Vera: beauty interwoven with history, modern artistry rooted in English tradition. Flowing gowns, dramatic light, and Tudor stonework created an editorial statement that was not simply fashion – it was the visual embodiment of a mission.
That mission belongs to Trishkeu, whose vision for Opera Vera is as bold as it is beautiful. Arriving in the UK on a Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa, she committed her artistry to bringing exceptional cultural benefit to her adopted home. With Opera Vera, she is creating Manchester’s first professional opera company – one unlike any other, dedicated to celebrating the voices of 20th- and 21st-century composers, particularly those of England, whose music deserves to be heard, known, and cherished as part of the nation’s living heritage.
The company’s debut performance, To Life Beyond, held at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation on September 20th, gave musical voice to this vision. Pairing Adam Gorb’s Beggar’s Belief with Shostakovich’s Op.127 Quartet, Opera Vera presented a programme that was both intellectually bold and emotionally searing, setting the tone for what promises to be an extraordinary artistic journey.
The Voice that Carried the Evening
At the heart of this debut was Trishkeu’s voice – a soprano of striking clarity and emotional depth, capable of both commanding power and delicate intimacy. Her full lyric instrument, bell-like in tone yet capable of remarkable warmth, projected with ease and elegance throughout the hall.
In Adam Gorb’s Beggar’s Belief, she shaped the tragedy with a uniquely feminine expressivity that was devastating in its dramatic truth. In Shostakovich’s Op.127, she shimmered with emotional and musical precision, capturing the crystalline fragility at the heart of the piece. That she delivered both scores entirely from memory – navigating their extraordinary complexity without a single page of music – underscored her technical mastery and artistic fearlessness.
Critic Robin Walker praised:
“Yuliya’s performance and characterisation was of the highest order: a truly dramatic and feminine expression of tragedy and artistic truth. It was a privilege to witness this.”
Composer-recorderist John Turner added:
“A really splendid performance! Wonderful singing and playing of Adam’s piece.”
And indeed, on stage Trishkeu was the embodiment of operatic glamour. Wearing exquisite gowns provided by Team Prom Nottingham, she appeared radiant, her ongoing modelling career evident in her elegance and poise. The visual splendour of the evening matched the musical one – an unforgettable combination that reinforced Opera Vera’s dedication to artistry in every detail.
The Ensemble: Virtuosity and Spirit
The evening’s brilliance was further illuminated by violinist Mollie Wrafter, whose playing brought an effortless virtuosity to Shostakovich’s restless writing. With a tone that could cut with steel or melt into silken lyricism, her performance demonstrated a level of professionalism and refinement that elevated the evening into something rare: a debut with the authority of a seasoned ensemble.
Opera Vera: A Cultural Flame Just Lit
The synergy between Jo Morley’s editorial vision and Opera Vera’s stage debut created more than an event – it unveiled a cultural statement. Opera Vera stands as a bold new force in British music, a company where beauty, heritage, and contemporary artistry unite.
The Manchester audience received the debut with palpable enthusiasm, not just for the music, but for what it represented: a company founded on passion for British arts and culture, determined to make a unique contribution to English cultural development.
What’s Next for Opera Vera
Opera Vera’s path is just beginning, with future performances already set to further its vision:
- Winter Dreams and Memories – December 15th at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation.
- Love: The Essence of Life – Spring at Bridgewater Hall (date to be confirmed via Opera Vera’s website).
- World Premiere of Adam Gorb’s Sunflowers – April 24th at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation.
If Opera Vera’s debut was a declaration, it spoke with conviction: a new cultural legacy is being written in Manchester – one that is beautiful, bold, and purposeful.
