GALLOPING COUTURE
1. Olessia, you moved from Moscow to New York at the age of 12. How did this shift in environment influence your early life and career path?
It was a transformative experience for me. The shift in environment exposed me to diverse cultures and opportunities that I hadn't encountered before. In New York, I was able to embrace my individuality and express myself in ways I hadn't imagined. The city's vibrant fashion scene ignited my passion for modeling, and it quickly became a way for me to showcase my creativity and emotions. This change also taught me resilience and adaptability. Navigating a new city and culture at such a young age helped me develop confidence and independence, which have been vital in both my personal and professional life.
2. Modeling started as a way to help your family with college expenses. Did you ever imagine it would evolve into such a passionate career?
When I first started modeling, my primary motivation was to help my family with college expenses. Initially, it felt like a practical solution to a financial need, but as I immersed myself in the industry, I discovered a deep love for the art of modeling. The experience of walking the runway, collaborating with creative teams, and expressing myself through fashion was incredibly fulfilling. I began to see modeling not just as a job, but as a platform for self-expression and creativity. Over time, my passion grew as I traveled the world and met inspiring individuals in the industry. I realized that modeling could be more than just a means to an end; it could be a lifelong pursuit that allowed me to embrace my creativity and share my perspective with the world.
3. New York is often seen as the heart of the modeling world. What was the most exciting or intimidating part of starting your career there?
It was both exhilarating and intimidating. The most exciting part was the vibrant atmosphere and the sheer energy of the city. Being surrounded by so many talented individuals and iconic fashion houses made me feel like I was part of something much bigger. The opportunity to walk in major fashion shows and collaborate with renowned photographers and designers was a dream come true. On the flip side, the competitiveness of the industry was quite intimidating. There were moments when I felt the pressure to constantly prove myself and stand out among countless aspiring models.
4. You had quite a few major life changes—such as becoming a mother while still modeling. How did your experience as a mother shape your work and the way you approach modeling?
Becoming a mother while continuing my modeling career brought profound changes to both my work and my perspective on life. Motherhood taught me invaluable lessons about balance, patience, and resilience. Rather than striving for an unattainable ideal, as a mother I began to appreciate my body for its strength and capability. Also, I wanted to set a positive example for my children, demonstrating that pursuing one's passions is possible, even amidst the challenges of parenting.
5. How do you stay motivated and confident during a photoshoot?
Being well-prepared helps boost my confidence. This includes practicing poses, knowing the concept, and ensuring I'm in good shape. I focus on maintaining a positive attitude. Before the shoot, I visualize the outcome, imagining myself looking great and enjoying the process. Surrounding myself with a supportive team, including photographers, stylists, and friends, creates a positive atmosphere. When feeling overwhelmed, I use deep breathing exercises to center myself and regain focus. I try to enjoy the experience, reminding myself that it's a creative collaboration. Focusing on the art rather than the pressure helps me stay relaxed.
6. You transitioned from modeling to acting, earning a Master's in Arts. What inspired you to pursue acting, and how did the challenges of acting school compare to those of modeling?
I wanted to express myself in a deeper way and tell stories. While modeling let me show emotions through pictures, acting allowed me to explore characters and connect with people more personally. Going back to school for a Master's in Arts helped me learn important acting skills, like understanding scripts and developing characters. Acting school had its own difficulties compared to modeling – it requires you to be emotionally open and to really become different characters. The rehearsals and feedback can be tough, but both fields are competitive and demand a lot.
7. How does your modeling career inform your approach to acting, and do you see any overlap between the two fields?
Modeling built my confidence in front of the camera and on stage, which helps me fully embrace my characters in acting. I've learned to use my body expressively through modeling. This skill is important in acting because it helps me show emotions clearly. Both modeling and acting require me to express feelings. Modeling taught me how to use my face and body to convey emotions, which is useful in acting. In both fields, I work with a team, like photographers or directors. My experience in modeling has made me more adaptable and open to feedback. Modeling often involves telling a story through pictures. This understanding helps me bring characters to life in acting, as I think about the story behind each role.
8. You mentioned an incredible experience with horses while studying acting. How did that experience shape your view on animals and influence your passion for horseback riding and polo?
Working with these animals taught me a lot about trust, connection, and communication. Horses are incredibly intuitive and can sense emotions, which helped me become more aware of my own feelings and how to express them, both on stage and off.
Horseback riding became a passion for me because it combines physical skill with a deep connection to the horse. Polo, in particular, added an exciting element of teamwork and strategy. The thrill of playing and the bond with the horse made me fall in love with the sport even more.
9. What projects are you most excited about at the moment?
I have some upcoming modeling campaigns that align with my personal values, allowing me to express myself in meaningful ways. I'm working on new pieces for an art exhibition that explore themes of motherhood and identity, which are very close to my heart. I'm collaborating with other artists and creatives, which is inspiring and helps me grow in new directions. I'm also looking at potential acting roles that challenge me and allow me to dive into complex characters.
10. Finally, for aspiring models or young women with multiple passions, what advice would you offer for balancing personal and professional growth while staying true to one's dreams?
Identify what matters most to you and focus on those goals. This will help you stay aligned with your passions. Use planners or apps to keep track of your commitments, allowing you to manage your time effectively. Be open to change and willing to adapt your plans as needed. Life can be unpredictable, and flexibility can help you navigate challenges. Make time for yourself to recharge. Taking care of your mental and physical health is essential for long-term success. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your dreams. Collaborate and share ideas with others who inspire you. Follow your heart and intuition. Pursue projects that resonate with you and reflect your true self. Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small. Celebrating achievements can keep you motivated.
